Getting Punked.

I always wanted to rock a cool pair of Doc Martens like these. Photo by AKinsey Foto via Flickr.

It makes my heart smile when worlds in which I live collide in cool ways. Last weekend, the hubs and I were enjoying our usual sipping-mochas-and-watching-CBSSundayMorning routine (family world) when this cool segment about the career of Vivienne Westwood came on.

What was probably, to most folks, a surface-level story of a super cool lady with orange hair who rocked (and continues to rock) the fashion world with her unique take on couture, became, to me, a speak-to-my-soul lesson on community (BOF world). I loved the insider’s view of how a group of passionate people stuck their collective middle finger up at the status quo and started a global movement in the process…the punk rock movement.

Some things that stood out to me as I was watching the segment:

The name of her first clothing shop was “Clothes for Heroes.”
So. Cool. To Dame Westwood, the community of like-minded people she surrounded herself with were but a tribe of heroes standing up for their beliefs. And she elevated them with her words, her actions and her designs.

Punks owned their movement with all that they had. The wore it. They played it. They pierced it. They preached it. Hmmm…sounds kind of Fisk-a-Familiar to me…

This quote: “All I’m really trying to do is make the world a better place.”
It doesn’t get much better than that to this Community Manager. Happy heart here.

I encourage you to take a few minutes to watch the segment yourself and share your thoughts about community, fashion or the punk rock movement! We’d love to hear them!
