Okay. Warning. Sappy post ahead.
These days I seem to think a lot. About crazy things. Like how on earth did I find myself in Greenville, South Carolina alongside of some of the most talented people on the planet?
I am no leadership expert, so you can take my opinion for what it’s worth. Over the years, I’ve been given a mountain of articles, books and advice about leadership and the role of a great leader. But I don’t believe leadership can be learned. It is quite simply, in my mind, a belief. A belief not just in yourself, but in the strength and wisdom of others. The great leaders I have known align themselves with brilliant people and give those smart people a lot of trust and opportunities to fail. They don’t over manage. They are comfortable letting others rise up and outshine them.
I just read the results of our second annual “happiness survey”. And while we are not perfect, we’re a delightfully happy bunch. Even though I live amongst that happiness every day, seeing our comments in writing took me by surprise. I’ll share some of my favorites:
“I’ve worked a bunch of jobs over the years. Brains on Fire is by far the best place I’ve worked. Its not only the diversity and quality of the work and the clients, but it’s mainly the people and the atmosphere. I’ve never been surrounded by so many great people.
When asked what part of your job would you do even if you didn’t get paid:
“All of it. Absolutely all of it. I can’t think of anything I wouldn’t do. This place is home. Inspiring people to change the world is priceless.”
When asked if you enjoy working at BoF:
“I really enjoy my job for a few reasons: 1. The people are fabulous. 2. It allows me to do different things. Nothing is routine. 3. It is meaningful.”
“I believe you get back what you put in. Brains on Fire understands this and wisely uses it to empower its family! Kudos to the leadership and the empowering model.”
To my partners, Greg Cordell and Greg Ramsey, who bravely joined forces with me ten years ago to bring this vision of Brains on Fire to life, I thank you for this journey. And to all the brilliant people who step forward every day and take ownership of our client’s success…shine on! Here’s to at least ten more amazing years!
Now aren’t you glad I opted for sap instead of some predictable Aprils Fool’s Day joke?
