Why do we do this?
March 6th, 2006
I was reflecting on that question this Saturday while at the local ADDY awards. And I know I mentioned before that we don’t put much stock in awards, but man, it’s fun to win. And yes, we did well, including Best of Show for our client, St, Francis, and the Judges Award for this blog. We are very humbled and thrilled by it all. And as Greg Cordell said to me, “We are lucky – but not for winning the awards. We are lucky that we have clients that are risk-takers and really let us do what we’re good at.”
Well said.
Like when Earshot came to us with a picture of Keith Richards lounging around in Morocco in the 60’s and said. “Build a store and an identity around this.” Or when St. Francis came to us and said, “Tell the community not only about our accomplishments, but about our soul.” Clients like these are priceless and worth so much more than any award could ever capture.
So why do we wake up and go to work in the morning here at Brains on Fire? I think it’s a different answer for different people. As for me, I love the people. I love the work. I love constantly meeting new kindred spirits. But (and you may think I’m fooling myself) I do it because I like to think that we’re changing the world. Sometimes in small ways and sometimes in big ways. And that’s good enough for me.
(To the ADDY judges: we now know who you are. And if you’re reading this…thank you.)

Our friend and ex co-worker Eric Whitlock who now teaches at Anderson University brought his senior graphic design students to the Addys.
After the show I was hanging out with a group of about 6 of the students and they asked me a question.
What’s the best thing about your job and this industry?
My first answer was that you have the ability to play a role in creating comunity change for the good. Henderson Advertising won big at the Addys for doing this… kudos guys.
My second answer was more selfish, instant gratification, travel, money, fame, haha.
But for me, my last answer was the best one. The relationships, with your co-workers and clients. I work with a great group of people, and we do work for some great people that humble me with their passion and commitment to their products and companies.
Spike your right we have been blessed this year.
