Humanity is Your Greatest Asset
Posted on October 13th, 2009 by and currently 5 commenting. Not that new web app. Not your new social media do-dad. Humanity. And with it all the good and all the bad that comes with it. This is a power to the people world, my friends.
Humans connect with humans. And we all know that nobody’s perfect. So when that customer has a problem and YOU CAN’T FIX IT, but you CAN offer an explanation of why things are the way they are, you’ve made a connection and a potential fan. When you, as a company, admit your mistakes - it shows people that you are not only willing to say, “we screwed up,” but it shows people that you are a company made up of people. People with good days and bad days. People that are capable of making mistakes. People that are doing their best. It opens a dialogue. It shows humanity.
And sometimes it’s all your customers want.
So don’t shy away from the human side of your business. Embrace it. And the use of technology will turn from a “me too” strategy, to a leadership role. Because you’re empowering your people - inside and outside your doors - to look at the world through THEIR lens - not yours.

WOW, this could not have come at a better time. My company is experiencing an extreme surge in business and we’ve subsequently been bombarded with shipping and customer service issues. Being a small independently owned company, we’re doing the best we can and instead of trying to sugar coat things and make excuses, we finally (as of just yesterday) started to tell people what was really going. I think it made a big difference. They wanted to know there was someone there who had heard their issue, and what we were experiencing was a positive spin with some negative consequences that people could relate to. It’s been less than 24 hours and it’s already made a difference. Instead of being angry, people are now much more agreeable and willing to work with us.
This is great advice that I hope more people follow.

In a previous life, I managed stores for a camera and photo-processing chain. Every now and then, something would go horribly wrong and we’d ruin somebody’s pictures.
It was never a roll of film they shot of the puppy in the garden, that they could just go back out and shoot again. Oh, no. It was their daughter’s wedding, the last photos of grandma before she was hit by the bus, or Bubba and the alien visitors before they left for Alpha Centauri.
But if it was handled properly, with a sincere apology, replacement film and processing, and an explanation of what happened and how we were going to fix it — those people often became our biggest fans.
I saw it happen again and again, over 20 years.
