Heavy Lifting
October 6th, 2008
Creating something meaningful is hard, hard work. Heavy lifting. Hard-hat area. Elbow grease. Getting stuff under your fingernails kinda stuff.
If it were as easy as pulling the model off the shelf and slapping it on the end of the product cycle, then kudos to you for making your “process” easier. But shame on you for suggesting the same solution for everybody.
Every company is different. And every company deserves their own unique solution. But to find it, you gotta roll up your sleeves and get down there in the trenches. There are no ivory towers. There are no plug-and-play solutions. There is only intellectual (and a lot of the time, physical) labor. And gut. Because until you do the heavy lifting not only can you not appreciate what you are trying to accomplish, but until you do the heavy lifting, it – the work – doesn’t become a part of you. And when it becomes a part of you then you know that you have to – you need to – do the best work you’ve ever done. Every. Single. Time. Because you’re tied to it. In way more than a professional sense, too.
So creating something meaningful is hard, hard work. Heavy lifting. Hard-hat area. Elbow grease. Getting stuff under your fingernails kinda stuff.
And worth every single thing you put into it.

It’s funny when some people forget that the vast majority of creativity is hard work.

Great post, Spike.
Seriously. This is weird for me, agreeing with you on everything these days. Can we try to find something to disagree on? ;D
