Never Forget
October 1st, 2008
I’m in Kansas City today and last night I had the great opportunity to tour the National World War I Museum in the downtown area. Even if you’re like me and not a history buff (like my dad is), if you’re ever in KC, do yourself a favor and take the time to go.
It’s an amazing museum, with one side dedicated to the war before the US got involved and the other half after the US got involved. To walk through those halls and hear the stories, see the conditions and view everything from the primitive airplanes to the wool uniforms was incredible. It reminded me where we have come from as a nation. The history of this country. And no, I’m not going to get on my soapbox about America.
My point is that it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle and bustle of our daily jobs. It’s easy to forget where that company’s roots are. To stray. To not be true to yourself. But revisiting the origins of your company – maybe the entruprenurial spirit that founded it or the ingenuity of that invention or discovery that people rallied around – those things are important to never forget. They’re engrained in the DNA of the company’s identity, and therefore your identity.
So if you wake up one day and start questioning why you’re company exists, maybe a good start is to revisit where you came from in the first place. For there may lie a wealth of inspiration and a rudder for the future.
