Dear BMW,

September 2nd, 2008

I love you. I admit it. When I started working with your brand and was sent out to your North American factory, it started. To see the pride. The craftsmanship. The precision and attention to every little detail, I was hooked. And then to actually get behind the wheel of an Ultimate Driving Machine, well that was it.

But if I may, I have one tiny suggestion for you concerning the roundel that adorns each and every hood and trunk of your blessed machines. You see, over time, the logo fades or the paint may even chip off of the blue and white. And that’s understandable – it happens. But number one, I really do think you should go back to making them out of solid metal instead of the plastic that you use now. And number two, I truly think that you should give them away for free. Maybe have people send in their VIN number to make sure they are legit, but that roundel is the symbol for everything you stand for. There’s even a fascinating history behind it. So why not make sure that you’re being represented in the best way possible? Not only will it provide a deeper connection to your loyal fans, but it could also add to your legacy.

Just a thought.

Yippee - I searched the net for one last year. And then again for instructions on how to remove and install it. Then I plunked down the $20 for a plastic one on ebay. How incredibly cool it would have been to see a bug on the BMW site for owners to get a new one for their 13 year old baby. For free? even better. I’d take a picture of it and use it as wallpaper on my phone, I’d twitter about it and let my non-BMW friends now what life is like with BMW looking out for you.

One day, maybe I will own a BMW. Until then, I do not feel sorry for you. :)

Amazing how life stands in details. Cars from 40K usd up and they get lost in a tiny detail.

One free replacement per year per owner would eliminate potential abuse.

Very good point on the metal fabrication, Spike. The vehicle and company’s dedication to superior quality and attention to detail should extend to the roundel.

That being said, I’m with Jason on this one. :D
