Bath & Body Works – revisited

January 7th, 2008

So almost one year ago, Jennifer wrote a post about how her love affair with Bath & Body Works was waning due to the fact that they were discontinuing some of her favorite scents. We could just leave it there, but then this post wouldn’t make much sense, would it?

Over the past 12 months, something very interesting has happened. The initial post received around eight comments. And now? There are 30. It seems that some of Bath & Body Works’ customers have been searching online to find others that share in their disappointment. And because of that we have been getting comment after comment (just got another one today, as a matter of fact).

Since the initial post, Bath & Body Works has started working with BazaarVoice to add reviews to their site – a fantastic first step in engaging their customers.

So what’s my point? I don’t really have one. I’m just fascinated that people continue to comment on a year-old post. That must mean there are some rabid fans out there of an established brand that want their voices heard. Sound familiar?

This doesn’t suprise me at all, Spike. In November of 2005, I wrote a post about how Nyquil changed the formulation of their medication, removing the pseudophedrine in order to avoid having their product locked up by stores (and thus, harder to buy). The product is much less effective, and at the time, Nyquil didn’t change the label to reflect the change. (They have now.)

It got a fair amount of response at the time, but I noticed that every cold ‘n’ flu season, I’d get an influx of posts, coinciding with people running out of their current supply of product to find that the new stuff just didn’t work.

To date, the post has 67 replies, the most recent in November of this year … two years later. What’s also remarkable is that my URL changed over the course of these two years, and that I’ve stopped blogging regularly, and yet, people keep finding the post.

Thanks for the comment, Rob. Very interesting indeed. It’s amazing how this internet thing works, eh?

The assumption has always been that blog posts were ephemeral. We’re finding that this isn’t the case. I still get a great deal of traffic from comments I left on blog posts back in 2005. Search engines obviously don’t look at time the same way we do when it comes to topic relevance.

Actually… it was 2 years ago. And I want my country apple silken lotion, darnit!

Sometimes you can get old scents in clearance bins at Bath & Body Works semi-annual sale (going on now and again in July). I have Cool Citrus Basil stocked up because this is the only time I can find it. I also noticed they put out the same holiday scents this year they had last year (because of complaints about getting rid of scents? I’m not sure) and they’ve also put out scents similar (almost exactly the same scents actually) as old favorites under different names. There’s a new apple scent almost like the old one, but I was never crazy about the apple, so maybe it just smells the same to me and not to those who loved it.

Yes, the continue a lot of scents and some of the favorites are special edition scents. Sometimes you can get them in the bargain bins during sales. Sometimes they bring some back and you can order online. If it’s a very hard to find scent, ebay is a good bet and you’ll probably pay a pretty penny for it. Also if you get to know other Bath And Body Works fans, they can be on the lookout for a particular scent in their store. Lots of times you can just call a store in some other state and make an order out.

    Hi,

If anyone is looking for discontinued Bath & Body Works products, we carry a pretty wide variety of them, and we’re adding new ones as often as they become available. Also, if you’re looking for something in particular that you don’t see, you can always contact us and we’ll do our best to find it for you!

Am looking for B&BW Cool Citrus Basil lotion. Can’t find it in stores, they say wait till Jan or June, or go online, it’s no where on line. Also can’t affort to pay $30.00 for an $11.00 product. Don’t understand why they don’t want to accomodate their customers, aren’t we the heart beat of their success???

Cool Citrus Basil? It is on the website! (And the soaps are on sale!)
