Take that, Radiohead
November 13th, 2007
So recently there was all this hubbub about Radiohead putting their new album online and letting fans and customers pay what they wanted for it. And yes, you could get it for free if you felt so inclined.
But Nine Inch Nail’s Trent Reznor recently teamed up with spoken-word and hip-hop artist Saul Williams for The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust! And you can pay $5 for it or $0. Your choice.
So what’s the difference?
Plenty.
There is no record label. There was no physical record released in the stores. You can download the artwork and lyrics as PDF files. You can even get the original FLAC files, which aren’t compressed and are a lot higher quality than mp3s. And while that might not seem like a lot to the folks who don’t know Trent and Saul, it’s a LOT to those underground fans who live and breathe this stuff.
Read the interview here.
It’ll be interesting to see what comes next.

I really like the way Radiohead plays.. I loved their last cd! Have you seen when they covered The Smiths? The band sang The Headmaster Ritual in a webcast. Here is the video: weshow.com/us/p/23339/radiohead_the_headmaster_ritual_live
