Where is the Word of Mouth Marketing Conversation Going?
November 12th, 2007
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve heard that this week the Word of Mouth Marketing Association is hosting a summit in Las Vegas. And, as we have with ever WOMMA event since its inception, a traveling band of Brains on Fireites will be there (Geno is even doing some speaking).
While I’m excited about going, I have to admit that I’m getting a little bored with the WOM conversations in recent books and on the web. Don’t get me wrong – there are a lot of great things that I learn on a daily basis, but there’s also a lot of regurgitation. And while this discipline is still a toddler, it’s time for the conversation to be elevated. The John Bells and John Moores of the world are pushing the conversation into new territory, but the industry needs to move there as a whole, too. It’s no longer only about web 2.0 and social networking – those are just cogs in a bigger picture.
So I’m anxious about what is going to be said this week in Las Vegas. And even more excited to have those hallway conversations that always seem to be my favorite part of these events.
We’ll try to do some reporting from the road. But, you know, it’s Vegas.

I suppose it’s one of those things that only really works when it’s done “naturally” instead of analyzing it to death. Kind of like going to a movie and enjoying it just for the fun of it and then a movie critic ruins it for you and makes you feel stupid for liking it.
Star Wars is one of the best examples of this. It was almost never made because the critics and Hollywood experts did not support it but the great WOM in 1977 made it what is was and Lucas laughed all the way to the bank.
The SW franchise has gotten worse because Lucas and his studio didn’t recapture the surprise and Han Soloish humor of the first trilogy.

I couldn’t agree with you more about how the conversation needs to be elevated. Looking forward to participating in some of the disucssions in Vegas. See you there.

Right on, Spike. Hey, you’ll have to single out Clayton Closson while you’re there… the guy has lots of ideas, if you can sift through the incessant rantings about the City of Detroit.
