NBC and YouTube break up
October 22nd, 2007
The blogosphere is all a twitter (no, not that Twitter) about NBC’s sudden disappearance from YouTube. NBC had its very own channel on the video-sharing site, but now that it’s launching Hulu “sometime in October,” which will be the homebase of all NBC content on the web.

Personally, it seems to me that NBC is once again defying logic and instead of trying to make their programs accessible to many (through very popular existing channels like iTunes and YouTube), they are trying to maintain the illusion of control.
Now I’m not declaring Hulu.com dead before it begins, but it’ll be interesting to see what happens. It seems that there are a lot of companies out there that are trying to invent their own channels for content distribution instead of using the ones that already exist. Why try and reinvent the wheel? Why play copycat? I just don’t get it.

There’s a time to have your own place and a time to go, as they say, where the “conversation is”. Even though I have my own business blog on my own server I see the need to place my photos on flickr;

or participate in social networking like Facebook;

or even to participate in blog networks or forums. I have seem very positive results, reestablished old connections and forged new ones. I’m not opposed to NBC doing their own thing but it’s crazy for them to pick up their toys and go to another room.

Spike,
Thought you might get a kick out of this video. I am helping some friends get their new site, Festival Park (festivalpark.org) up and running. Their first event is a battle of the bands, partly sponsored by the local NBC affiliate in Raleigh, NC.
