Sonic says, “Bring it.”
October 19th, 2007
The newest addition to the Brains on Fire clan (shout out to Matt!) pointed out today that those Sonic Drive In spots have reached a new level. (Well, it happened a year ago. But if it’s new to me, it might be new to someone else, too.)
You’ve probably seen the humorous TV spots that has two people – mostly the same two guys – in their car at a Sonic talking about…well, nothing. Kinda reminds me of Seinfeld that way. Anyway, the spots are the brainchild of the boys and girls over at Barkley. Good stuff.
Well, as what happens to a lot of good commercials, parodies began to pop up on YouTube. Some are good. Some not so good. But nonetheless, it’s a huge compliment for customers to spend their valuable time to join in the fun. On their own. Without some gimmick or contest.
That in and of itself is great, but the Sonic guys took it a step further. They posted a YouTube video telling all those people making parodies to “Bring It.”
“And for all those who have already put ones up – who have already brought it…we’re bringing it back to you. So if you want to bring it back to us…”
So let’s recap: Company makes commercials. Customers make parodies of commercials. Company recognizes customers in the same, fun tone of voice and attitude that made the customers want to parody them in the first place.
It’s a great example of how good creative and good customer engagement can work hand-in-hand.

It’s very cool. They’ve done a great job. If we had a Sonic here in Boston I’d visit it. Poking fun at yourself is also very smart.

I don’t know if you saw, but they also did an award show about a month later.

As a customer, I love it when companies open up and let us inside on the fun. I agree that this was a smart, dare I say brilliant idea. I whole-heartedly believe letting the customer in is the best way to gain loyal, dedicated customers who will use that word of mouth idea to the fullest. Bravo Sonic, bravo!
