Two Thoughts on a Friday

August 24th, 2007

Thought #1: I’ve written about the Case Study Trap before. But there’s another thing on my mind: EVERY client or new project you take on should be your next case study. I know as marketers we highlight our greatest successes in our “case studies.” But maybe in your materials you shouldn’t have a portfolio section and a case study section (like we currently do on our website), but maybe one or the other. Just a thought.

Thought #2: Ever seen Hidalgo? There’s a great line in there, “I’m not here to insult anybody, sir. I’m just here to race.”

Some people don’t like our style, and we’re cool with that. As a company called “Brains on Fire,” there are certain expectations that come with the name. And, because we are not only identity and WOM evangelists, but practitioners as well, we have to walk our talk or we’re just full of hot air. So we march to the beat of a different drummer. Our business philosophies go against the industry grain. We make up our own titles. Hell, we even answer the phone differently. Some people love it. Others hate it.  And that’s okay with us. But we’re not here to insult anybody. We’re just here to do fascinating, inspiring, rewarding and engaging work that builds remarkable companies.

That’s it.

Count me in as one of the people who likes it. We also use creative titles in my business and I like to tell me my “title” is not my position but rather my “mission.” My nametag says, “Captain Innovation” I could care less if anyone knows I am the “owner” or “president” of the company but I want them to know that my goal is to always be innovating and taking leadership in doing it.

I wish more businesses were “organic” and open. I find myself being on guard or intimidated by the same old professional walls companies put up.

I like the idea of titles being a mission. “It’s not a position, it’s a mission.” I think we kind of do that here, even if we didn’t think of putting it that way.
