Just that Simple

July 13th, 2007

This quote was on the footer of the AAF daily newsletter today. And I think it pretty much says it all:

“The product that will not sell without advertising will not sell profitably with advertising.” — Albert D. Lasker

This is so true and yet ironic because it seems a lot of the brands that do most of the advertising could get by with less advertising. For example Apple may runs TV, print and other ads but most of their advertising actually seems to be done by their consumers. One comment I hear from a lot of Mac users is, “I wish I earned commission for all the Macs I have sold.”

Another question related to the same company has do with competitors. If you’re selling something you also have to ask yourself bluntly if your product is so bad people will flock to buy another one i.e. the iPhone. (Yes, I know people are tired of hearing about it.)

I’ve heard over and over again how people craved this device because it was so usable compared to their current mobile device.
