The People Connection
May 8th, 2007
So by now you’ve probably heard of Ryan Fitzgerald. He’s the guy you’ve seen all over the news and entertainment shows who posted his phone number on MySpace, YouTube and other sites and has told people to call him anytime, for any reason, just to talk. During the interviews on TV, he stops and answers his phone and tells the people to please call him back later while the interviewer gets all kinds of annoyed – good stuff.
Well, Joe, our own Young Gun here at Brains on Fire, sent me a link yesterday to Rick Schrager, who will write you a good-ol’-fashioned-handwritten-on-a-piece-of- paper-put-it-in-an-envelope-and-slap-a-stamp-on-it-letter. No kidding. You don’t have to tell him anything but your name and address if you like, or you can give him some context to write you about. But basically, if you want a letter, you’ll get a letter.
So what’s going on? I think it might have something to do with human beings’ innate need to connect with others. To reach out to others. And to make the world seem a little less big. It’s gotta be an interesting study on some sort of anthropological level. But it’s an interesting take on marketing and how it needs to be approached. Now, more than ever, people want to connect with others on a basic level. And I think we all need to be very aware of that in any communication that’s created.
*P.S. The president of T-Mobile, Ryan’s mobile provider, called him and has offered to pick up the tab for the tens of thousands of calls he’s been getting. Well done, T-Mobile.

Spike,
I think you’re right. Although we love our techno toys they can separate us from each other to some degree. We need personal contact, a human voice, and written words from others. I also think this human need extends to blogging and to my commenting here.

Lewis-
I agree. The need for personal contact definitely extends to our commenting. It’s always nice to have other opinions of what we’ve written — hopefully it’s a reaffirmation, but even when it’s not it is nice to know someone is paying attention.
