UGC for Good

May 1st, 2007

You may be familiar with the video sharing platform Revver. Revver is a free and unlimited video sharing platform that pairs uploaded user generated videos with targeted advertisers and splits the ad revenue with the video creator.

tx.ondrasik.jpgYou may also be familiar with John Ondrasik of the band Five for Fighting and his earnest, emotional hits such as “Superman”, “100 years”, and “The Riddle”.

Revver and Ondrasik, inspired by the lyric of the new Five for Fighting song “World” which asks “What Kind of World Do you Want?” have put together a community of videos answering that question for the purpose of charity fundraising. I don’t know why its so refreshing to see a now-common user generated content contest for something other than profit, but it is. If you visit WhatKindofWorldDoYouWant.com and watch any of the videos from start to finish, Revver will donate 66% of the advertiser’s payment - up to $.49 per view - to one of the 6 charities that John Ondrasik has selected (including Autism Speaks). If you want to support a charity of your own, just create and upload your own video about what type of world you want and start leading people to watch it. Because of the emotional content, the comments on most of the videos are as touching as the videos.
While there are just over 100 videos uploaded as of yet, I think this is an exciting new model. This seems like a huge positive for the advertisers, charities, and band alike. The questions will be whether or not the videos are compelling enough to hold attention and whether or not the charities can mobilize to keep the fresh content coming. Can emotional viral spread as quickly as wacky viral? I don’t know, but lets give it a shot. So, to all of you who have ever burned time on YouTube or Break, I invite you to feed your viral need here and do something good at the same time.

Viginia, found out about your post because I subscribe to Google Alerts, which sends me a note whenever the line “What Kind of World Do You Want?” from Five for Fighting’s song, appears on the web. Using the link below, you’re welcome to see how a forthcoming book carries the same title. In fact, I’d be glad to send you a copy with my compliments.
