Stumble
January 17th, 2007
Yesterday I got an email from an old friend. It ended up being one of those “come check out this cool thing I found on the internet” sort of emails. Well… he’s a pretty cool guy, so I decided, why not? And now I fear I may never get any work done ever again.
I’m not really sure how new this is, but it’s new to me, and I think it’s pretty cool. Stumble Upon is a plug-in for your browser (I think it has to be Firefox or IE) that allows you to ’stumble’ on sites all over the internet that you may never have found otherwise. You can build your profile, choosing from a database of 500 topics, and begin discovering links to the wild and wooly corners of the internet. People rate, recommend and refer, and you reap the benefits of everyone else’s time wasting… and contribute to it with your own. You can search specific topics or you can just click on “Stumble!” to see where you end up. I pushed my new ‘Stumble!’ button a few times and came up with this, this, this, this and this. Heck, I even learned how to say “How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?” in LATIN!
It’s a great way to get a picture of the online world beyond your ordinary scope. It’s a pathway into understanding people you might never have met. It’s a source of inspiration and kicks in the head that just might get you thinking in another direction.
And it’s really fun.

Just discovered Stumble a few weeks ago myself. I’m just a little addicted to the “video” Stumble function.
There are a lot of other great Firefox add-ons you should check out, including one called called “Answers” that gives you a definition/ explanation for any word on any page just by holding down “Alt” and clicking on the word.
