Passion
January 15th, 2007
Here’s a funny little example of a passionate, infectious group of folks. There is a show on our local NPR station that comes on about lunchtime. I often catch a bit of it while driving to a meeting or to get some lunch. It’s these two or three entomologists from Clemson University. They’re bug experts. And man, do they LOVE talking about bugs. People call in just to ask them bug questions. It is seriously amazing. An you know what, I love them. I sit in the car an extra few minutes when I happen to catch it. Not to learn about bugs really, but to remind myself to stay true to MY passions. I am passionate about this company and the work we do in the world. I love what we get to do everyday. Ask anyone who knows me. I have to watch myself so it doesn’t come off as shameless self-promotion.
That passion is also something we look for when we talk to potential clients. Do they love what they’re doing? We’ve learned that if you want to create advocates, you have to have a strong and genuine passion for the work you do – whether you’re a banker, sell construction supplies or own a group of resturants.
One of our team-mates went on a trip with a fairly new client recently. When he returned and gave a download to the internal team, he said something I love when he started describing his trip. “First of all let me just say this. This company is very proud. They really love what they do.”
Genuine passion (or lack of it) is easy to spot.

Hmmm… An “NPR moment…” I have those very often. Sit in my car listening to the end of another fascinating story.

Reminds me of Car Talk on NPR, I’m not into cars, have no interest in them outside of the transportation issue but listening to those guys makes me love cars. They must be great at what they do to have that occur.
