Sofas are perfect for conversations
January 8th, 2007
I love sofas. So from the very first moment I saw the new Kleenex “Let it out” television spots I was intriged. What also got my attention was taking a low involvement product “tissues” and trying to build some emotional connection. A very tuff sale. But I liked what I saw. www.Letitout.com is a work in progress, the blog link takes you to an invitation to share your email for further stories and I’m sure new product information will be coming soon. The rest of the site is just teaser lifestyle photos with ad copy, promising more is to come. I’m not going to bash Kleenex or their agency for their first atttempt at getting their feet wet with customer engagement. It’s just that you guys had me at the blue couch, and I was expecting more, like stories from taking the couch on the road. See I’ve been there, done that. 4 years ago we took a couch on the road for 30 days in South Carolina and invited teenagers to just sit and talk and film the conversations. They named her Marilyn and to this day she still pops up in converstions with some teens.

Hey Geno, wanna buy my sofa? I have a late 1800s empire sofa that I cannot seem to interest anyone in. It’s beautiful but admittedly it hurts to sit on it for more than ten minutes or so. Long and sleek and heavy as a ‘76 Chevy Impala with a trunk full of watermelons. The idea of a sending it on a (one way) road trip sounds good to me. Maybe I could get commercial photographers to sit on it and talk about stuff …but it’d probably make ‘em all cranky? Who’d want to film that? I’ll take $300 for the sofa right now.

Geno, interesting comments posted here. I’ll stop in soon and see you guys, it must be four, five plus years since I’ve seen you. I’m still here but I’ve begun to change things. Last year was my 20th and I wanted more range in projects, so I now do more than cartoon/humor stuff and doing paintings for galleries and collections about 50/50. Basically, this is an “art studio” and I do just about anything that’s art and design related. Click my name and have look at my site and see new-ish images.
The scope of discovery and study of such broad subjects is rewarding and I feel more informed over all as an artist. Agencies have changed as you know, I’m encountering so many people taking on creative tasks without design and art direction backgrounds. It makes for increasingly less satisfying assignments for me. But I’ll be here for the next twenty.
Talk to you soon. —Joel
