Wii!
December 15th, 2006
I am not much of a gamer. The extent of my knowledge of the Nintendo Wii was pretty much from the episode of South Park (the only one I’ve seen in YEARS) when Cartman freezes himself because he can’t wait the 3 days until the Wii comes out… and it throws history out of whack… and there was something about otters too. I dunno.
But I was catching up on Russell Davies’ blog today, and he pointed out some rather impressive Wii action photos on flickr. And really… they’re great. Pictures of kids and grandparents (independent of one another) waving their arms about in their living rooms. Heck, I read some article about an inordinate amount of people being too overzealous as they play and breaking their controllers… sometimes even their TV screens! With all the excitement (generated not by advertising, but by sharing consumer experience), I can’t help but be a little curious… probably not curious enough to buy one (cuz I’m cheap), but definitely intrigued. So here I am… someone who pays no attention to video game marketing, someone whose game knowledge comes from the geeky guys I work with (Spike, Geno, Justin)… and I’m paying attention to the Wii. Heck, as Russell points out: “Marketing’s not that hard these days. Build something great. People will share.”
He’s right, of course. You want people to rally around your company, your product, your service, your whatever… all the clever marketing in the world just plain can’t replace a truly remarkable product. People will flock to you if you’re worth it… and they’ll call you on it if you’re not.
Now, I have to sit around and wait for Spike or Geno or Justin to go ahead and buy a Wii so I can try it.

I’m not too much of a gamer… but I can assure you that all of the good you hear about the Wii is not enough. Its crazy fun to see people swinging a controller like a baseball bat or a golf club!

The Wii was designed to appeal to non-gamers and was even launched with a WOM program - 20 or so infliencers who did NOT consider themselves gamers were asked to invite their friends and familiy over to play with the system and give feedback. Hearing this made me think that I, a hardcore non-gamer, might enjoy it too…

The question is whether or not the hype and excitement of the truly interactive Wii controlers will last more than a few months.
Aside from well fed hype, Wii’s cool factor is really on the level of the Elmo dolls and Playstation’s Eye Toy of yore: Exciting to play with for about a week or two, and then quickly forgotten.
Only time will prove me wrong, but I’ll be happy to eat crow if you still thinks it rocks this time next year.
