So here are my top quotes from day 1 at the Word of Mouth Marketing Association’s Summit in DC:

The internet isn’t new media, it’s THE media. - Ted Leonsis, Vice Chairman, AOL

Don’t try to create the party. Go to where the party is happening. - Geno Church, Word of Mouth Inspiration Officer, Brains on Fire

How you trust will soon be more important than who you trust. - Gary Stein, Director of Strategy, Ammo Marketing

Avoid “tell a friend” language. It’s limiting. - Jim Calhoun, PopularMedia

Serve. Don’t sell. - Joel Brook, ExactTarget

More to come…

    Spike,

Good stuff. However, Jim’s quote leaves me confused. What does the quote mean? “Avoid ‘tell a friend’ language. It’s limiting.”

If it means write simply and in the spoken language of your audience (write like your audience speaks is writing 101), I disagree. If it means something else, I am too thick to get it.

I’ve achieved nugget-status. Congrats to Geno and the team on your WOMMIE!

Great to hear from you, Lewis. Here was my interpretation: that the term “tell a friend” has a marketing-speak voodoo feel to it and customers won’t touch it with a ten-foot pole (or would be more likely to pass it on if you used the language that fits your particular identity).

Gary - you’re far, far beyond nugget-worthy. We’ve always been big fans of yours. Thanks for the kind words and the comment.
