Bonehead Roundup

November 17th, 2006

Who are this week’s boneheads?

Ad agency principals - at worldwide shops and boutique shops - that are bashing Customer Generate Media (CGM). These folks are freakin’ out. Why? Because they are losing control. Because that are afraid that someone else can come up with an idea that they couldn’t. And because their over-inflated egos and paychecks are taking a hit.

Read about it at Brand Autopsy.

Boneheads.

I smell a weekly feature. Love it. And I think what they are truly afraid of is not that they might not be able to come up with an idea, but that other ideas will be more relevant and work better…that a consumer could -gasp- be more in touch with the conversation than a CD.

Spike … you and the rest of the BoF crew are LAZY!!! How could you delegate responsibility to everyday people to talk about Fiskars? That’s YOUR job.

But your laziness alos extends to not developing great copy. “Live life. Love life. Scrap life.” That’s should not come from a Fiskateer … that should come from BRAINS ON FIRE.

And, the whole “Viralmentalist” thang shows just how lazy BoF is. How could you let teens come up with that copy? HOW???

    You are so lazy.

But you are also so BRILLIANT.

Thanks for the link love and for being a supporter of brilliant ideas no matter who created them.

God forbid any company should ever empower its employees or customers. That’s just crazy talk.

got it. the guys in the big agencies know that everytime something new hit the market, they are late and must buy a company to jump on the bandwagon.

Spike: On the Ad Age piece, I especially enjoyed your commment–almost as much as I enjoyed God’s comment :-).

Readers: Do take the time to read through the comments of the Ad Age piece–as lousy as many of them are. Denial, baby.

Great points are made. But I think that the people who deny the worth of CGM/CGC are simply afraid of it, because it appears to be new. Perhaps remnants of the dot-com failure still echo in their minds?

    Thanks for the love, CK.
