Connected Marketing – A Book Review
August 21st, 2006
As promised, I wanted to post a down-and-dirty review of “Connected Marketing – the Viral, Buzz and Word of Mouth Revolution” by Justin Kirby and Paul Mardsen. Justin was kind enough to send us an author’s edition a while back and it has been passed around the office for a while now. So there are a lot of dog-eared pages, highlighted passages and some general wear and tear on the book.
And do you know why?
Because this book rocks. On many levels.
First off, keep in mind that this book is UK based, which gives it a unique perspective on the word of mouth movement. There are several contributing authors that go into great detail on how they accomplished a particular task using viral, buzz or word of mouth (which is all lumped under “connected marketing” in this case).
The first half of the book is all about case studies. There are dozens of them. In depth. Step-by-step. With dos and don’ts. “Takeaway” recaps. And a lot of them are from UK based companies that I’ve never heard of, so the case studies are new but still very relevant from many different industries.
The second half of the book is all about “Connected Marketing Principals,” which still has a lot of great content, but uses more broad strokes to talk about myths, negative buzz and what the future holds.
My recommendation is a glowing one. It’s an easy read with a lot of great information that will probably birth new ideas for you and your company. I’m going to keep it near by and I know I’ll be referencing it many times in the future. So go on and get this book.

Spike … big blush from having just read your review. I’ve just had a has a baby boy, so haven’t been crawling the web quite as much as I used too. But glad you like the book.
