What Bloggers Can Teach Brands
July 20th, 2006
Rob Stevens wrote an interesting post yesterday that hit something very near and dear to my heart - the pressure of writing a worthy blog post. He goes on to apply this idea to attention economy - the process of an audience determining whether the value of what they are about to absorb is worth the time they would spend absorbing it. (That may be the most business speak I have ever used at one time. Wow. I’m a little light-headed). Nonetheless, It kinda makes you wish that more brands would operate in that state of pre-blog-post anxiety. You know, that place after you’ve written, but before you click on “publish.” You’re fine-tuning, you’re reassessing, you’re making sure that what you’re putting into the world deserves to be. Sure, I could publish every random thought that came into my head (and on my personal blog, I do) the same way that companies with billions of marketing dollars flood us with more random rambling than anyone should have to deal with. But the point is, if you want people to give you their time and attention (let alone, their money!), then maybe there should be that pre-blog pause. There are plenty of messages out there that probably could have perished in the unpublished draft folder and none of us would have been the worse for it.
So there ya go. It turns out bloggers can provide more than critique, they can provide an example.

I’ve had people tell me that they’re going to make an example of me before, but this is a new one on me.

I very recently started our business blog. Nightmares haunted me before because of this issue. And today? It belongs to my most relevant thoughts to ponder the value of a post for the many others outside my brain. On the other hand I have to realize that I will never ever be able to anticipate whom I will reach. Be authentic, be serious but not too much, and reconsider the aim of it all regularly.
The ridge is thin between myself and my own business, not easy to stay on either side.
And now the pre-post consideration: send yes or no !
