Viral marketing, urban myth or just popular science?
June 14th, 2006
I was listening to a talk station on Sirius on my drive into work this morning and the usual political conversations turned to Mentos and Diet Coke. I was mildly interested in the conversation about dropping a couple of Mentos candies into a Diet Coke bottle and watching it create a geyser. So I googled it when I got to the office.
Wow, this thing is everywhere. Hundreds have posted Mentos/Coke geyser videos on YouTube and mainstream internet news outlets are now picking up the story.
This news article reports that Perfetti Van Melle the makers of Mentos are considering a marketing deal with two guys (eepybird.com) behind one of the videos. David Letterman is even jumping in, he has reportedly contacted these guys about coming on Late Night.
So what does global branding giant Coke have to say about this. They hope more people will drink Diet Coke than experiments with it. Go figure.

I’ve seen this done and it was incredible. The science teacher at my daughter’s school tested this out (outside of course) and it stopped traffic. Even a police officer stopped to see it. It was wild. Good thing we know . . . I don’t want a gastric eruption.
