NIN

Last night Justin and I went to Nine Inch Nails in concert. It was both of our first time seeing NIN in person. Justin listened to a lot of NIN in high school. I’ve been a closet NIN fan, but not a dedicated fan.

What an interesting crowd mix. Lots of black hair, make-up, and trucker hats. That’s the way we do Goth in the south. I’m sure Trent Reznor had a laugh. Trent is not the skinny goth icon anymore. He’s now grown into a muscled up buzz haircut rocker, reminds me a little of Henry Rollins.

You can now count me as a more dedicated NIN fan. This was a very tight show, that kicked you in the teeth. It was great to see a band invest in the lost art of the light show. No lazer lights here, just deep intense colors that took you on a moody trip only to wake you up in a bath of white and gray light. And who needs to see another big projection screen behind the band. They just dropped a mesh curtain around the stage and as it filled with fog, video images danced on the mesh.

But the best part of the show was the music. Loud and tight with dynamic starts and stops. And Trent sounded great to boot. The arena was also filled with a small but intense crowd that sang every lyric in synch with Reznor.
I stopped short of buying a new NIN t-shirt, maybe I should have. I can’t wait to start off my run today listening to “Every day is exactly the same” on my ipod. And it just doesn’t feel right at the moment to be bustin my ass in a NIKE shirt.

Yer right, G. The show was great! I wish they played some songs from “The Fragile,” but I still loved it. The atmosphere they created was definitely intentional and well-executed. Too bad most bands don’t have the budget for such a visual feast.
