The Blog Popularity Contest

February 20th, 2006

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been seeing a lot of articles about the “haves and the have-nots” of the blogosphere. Apparently, there has been an outcry by the have-nots because the blog elite (the top 50 blogs) won’t link back to them, among other issues.

And my reply to this is: who freakin’ cares?

I wasn’t aware that my self-worth was linked to my blog ranking (which, if you’re wondering, is 78,449 as of today…according to Technorati). And I wasn’t aware that the purpose of a blog was to see how many hits you could get per day.

I thought that the purpose of a blog was to put your voice out there and allow kindred spirits to find and connect with you.

I’m fine being a B or even C-list blogger. And Brains on Fire will happily take a 78 and-a-half thousand out of 28.3 million ranking. Because it’s never been about the number of clicks – it’s about who is doing the clicking. And I can only hope that we’ll never lose sight of that.

And if you see Johnny football hero in the hall

Tell him he played a great game
