Brains on Fire is in the process of growing and therefore hiring. At my friend Olivier’s suggestion, I just read Guy Kawasaki’s blog on the art of recruiting. I love many things about his advice, especially this: Hire better than yourself. I also love this from the someone in the comment section. “If you do not feel comfortable hiring someone better than you, then you should not be involved in the hiring process.”
I have often said it, but I am in awe, absolute awe of everyone that chooses to call Brains on Fire home. I am reminded of it just about every time I attend a meeting. This place is not about me — or my very smart business partners – it is about the amazing team we have been able to attract.
In fact about three weeks ago, after a long rough week with one too many things going on in my head, I attended an important kickoff meeting with a group of folks we really wanted to work with. It was a challenge and perfect fit project at the same time. Well, I almost blew it – big time. Just sort of lost my train of thought as I stood up to present. (If you have NEVER had that happen, trust me – it’s not good.) The team with me recovered and thanks to them we are still moving forward on a project we are really excited about. It was just amazing to see them picked up the pieces. I am still in awe about it. And I know without a doubt this same team will do a great job.
Oh — I also love Guy’s shopping center advice. I have my own version of that – would I be happy if I if I needed to have a potential new hire over to my house for dinner on a Saturday night? That’s pretty telling too. Thanks Guy.

Great advide … can I also suggest, dont hire lots of people just like oneself - its a natural tendency to be drawn to people in whome you can see your own (perceived) qualities. There is one of “you” the company already - and to build the team you often need someoen quite different to “counterbalance” you.
