George Hincapie Day

September 12th, 2005

This past Friday (9/9) was declared George Hincapie day here in Greenville, SC. Now unless you’re a true competitive cycling and Tour de France fan, you might not know who he is. (And, like the president of Brains on Fire’s 16-year-old son says, “Your not really a Tour de France fan unless you can name two other cyclists besides Lance Armstrong.”) Actually, I doubt most of the residents of Greenville know who he is.

There was a parade down Main Street and awards presented by the major and one of our Senators. And yes, even Lance was there to give a speech and pay tribute to his right-hand man. There was a great turnout and I think George was somewhat overwhelmed.

I’m glad we got to honor a hero of Greenville. And I have to give kudos to Mayor White for recognizing that we have one of the largest cycling populations per-capita in the country and giving that tight knit cycling community its due. Although it’s of a slightly political nature, it’s a good example of listening to your customers and surprising and delighting them with something that speaks directly to their lives.

Congratulations, George. You deserve it.
