Lesson Learned: Don’t be so quick to judge

August 15th, 2005

I jumped on the bandwagon with “Inked” on A&E Network right from the start. Carey Hart, Vegas, Tattoos and Casinos, sounds like a reality show slam dunk, right? At least I thought so. After I had watched the first couple of episodes I started seeing trailers for TLC’s Miami Ink. I told my wife “look at that - TLC trying to put a show out just to compete with Inked, I’m not going to watch it.” But good ole insomnia fixed that. I watched three episodes back-to-back-to-back. Hum I don’t want to like this show, but I do. As I watched the next episode I started realizing why: Miami Ink focuses on the art of tattooing. And man, these guys are talented and inspiried, especially Garver. The show has a gritty, real feeling about it. I still like Inked, but as I’m getting closer to a decision about getting my own first tattoo, these shows are guiding me to what direction I should go in. Ami, Garver, Nunez and Darren of Miami Ink have become artists I truly admire and I hope to make the trek to Miami to get my first ink.

With so many programming choices and the (still growing) weekly ad nauseam reality show scattershot, it’s hard not to be a bit cynical about the latest pre-packaged flavor of the month concepts, especially when their titles make them seem like copies of copies of copies. I hate to admit it, but there are little RTV gems out there. (Call them guilty pleasures, I guess.) It isn’t all bad. If a show can make you laugh, that’s already a worthy accomplishment. But if it can truly engage or even inspire an audience, then it definitely has merit.

Here’s a gem for you… a VERY refreshing reality show - Showtime’s “Penn & Teller: BULLSHIT!.” It’s humorous, engaging, inspiring and surprisingly balanced (left wing vs. right wing).
