Goals are Good

As part of our evolution into a B Corp, we have spent a lot of time over the past year thinking and talking about ways to create a strong, positive internal culture that not only supports doing great work, but also the development of happy, healthy humans. We’ll be sharing more about these new programs and perks in the days ahead, but today we’re focusing on our new “BOF Goals” perk.

Each member of our team was challenged to come up with a personal professional goal to pursue in 2017. Successful completion of a goal will be rewarded with a $100 bonus at the end of the year. From reading more to learning new skills to dressing more professionally, we’ve set our sights and intentions on making 2017 the best year yet.

Check out our goals below!

ROBBIN

1. What is your goal?
I am choosing to meditate every single day. For a year. I will start with 10 minutes a day until July 31st, then move to 20 for the rest of the year. I will use various online resources until I find one I love.

Why did you choose this goal?
I believe CALM is better way to work and lead. I have always felt and been told by a therapist that it would be good for me. My goal is for us to be a CALM company. (I stole that from the Base Camp guys, but I LOVE it.)

How will this goal help you become better professionally?
I think it will help me make better decisions and it will help me be a better listener and leader. Which will great for all of us!

AMY

What is your goal?
To clock less screen time in the evenings and on weekends + to fill that time with reading two books per month.

Why did you choose this goal?
I love social media and have found that I can easily go down the rabbit hole for hours as the day (and night…and weekend) goes whizzing by. The past couple years I have set other personal goals around finding more balance when it comes to digital vs. real life and have found them to be really beneficial. Last year I set a goal to put my phone away whenever I’m dining with someone in person. That small act made a huge difference that allowed me to be so much more present in the moment with the person I’m sharing a meal with. (And so much more cognizant of how distracting and detracting it is to have phones on a table buzzing and lighting up when you’re supposed to be enjoying the company and conversation of a friend.)

How will this goal help you become better professionally?
As writers, I think one of the most important things we can do is read. Seeing the ways other minds and pens work helps us sharpen and hone our own skills.

ANDREW

What is your goal?
I want to shoot a photo project and produce a gallery show from it.

Why did you choose this goal?
I chose this goal because I’ve realized I need an additional creative outlet to work on my photography outside of client work. The nature of shooting for specific clients is that the work can get repetitive, and that translates into a rut for me. So the photo project is to give me structure and a reason to shoot outside of work.

Also, I thought the photo project could dovetail with our tentative move to the Village of West Greenville. I have been contemplating doing a project based on that community, and displaying the images in the proposed new BOF gallery space.

How will this goal help you become better professionally?
Photography’s one of those things where you get worse if you’re not doing it all the time. Only shooting assignments means I stagnate, and if I stagnate, I shoot less personal work, which means I’m not progressing as a photographer.

LAURA

What is your goal?
I have a goal to work towards establishing (more) normalized work hours for myself. While as Community Manager part of my job will always be to be “on” almost all the time, I want to work towards reigning in a little bit of the craziness to a better balanced work schedule. That being said, my goal for the next 6 months is to leave the office before 7PM, at least 3 times per week.

My goal is not to do less work, but to do more work within normal office hours. Quality > quantity, if you will.

Why did you choose this goal?
Brandy and I have discussed that – for safety reasons – if/when we move into a new office, working late nights after dark will no longer be an option. So in preparation for that time, this goal will ultimately establish a habitual routine that will be necessary once we move.

Additionally, I’m also trying to break some of my night owl habits and establish a more reasonable and consistent bedtime for myself. Unfortunately, it is currently not uncommon for me to go to bed after 12-1AM. (As you can imagine, this quickly clashed with the “normal” sleep schedule of those of us working full-time day jobs.) My hope is that if I can leave the office before 7PM, I will be able to get in bed at an earlier hour, and thus be better rested.

How will this goal help you become better professionally?
In theory, when I’m well-rested I become a better asset to BOF as a healthier, happier employee. Adequate sleep will enable me to be more focused and efficient with the time I have during “normal” work hours, and keep the work outside of office hours to a minimum. This will also help combat getting sick and burnout, while keeping my safe in our new office space. 🙂

BRANDY

What is your goal?
Write 4 articles/blog posts related to BOF in 2017

Why did you choose this goal?
I love writing. Putting something on paper and trying to relay a thought/passion/or idea to readers is a challenge. Gets my creative juices flowing!

How will this goal help you become better professionally?
I’ve let life and work slow me down from taking out time to keep my writing muscle in shape. Talking about us and how we operate, how we work so hard to take care of our team/do better/be better will inspire me to keep dreaming of new ways to make our team happy. And also give me another chance to practice explaining why we do what we do…related to money and our people!

JOSH

For my professional development goal I chose to take six motion graphics classes. There are a couple reasons I chose this but the main one is that it’s always been something I’ve been interested in and it would help mix up what I do on a daily basis a little bit for work. Keeping me feeling fresh as well as filling a hole that we have on our team. This will help me have another skill set available to our team which in turn creates more money for everyone. This goal will help me stop procrastinating and actually do something I’ve been wanting to do on my own for years.

AMANDA

What is your goal?
For 2017, I would like to complete at least one book each month. The books I choose will need to further my knowledge in social media, branding or just how to be a better human in general.

Why did you choose this goal?
I have a tendency to start a book and then find a new one, leaving me with a ton of half-read books. I want to commit to finishing them 100% before starting a new one and noting some takeaways that will benefit me to refer back to.

How will this goal help you become better professionally?
This goal will allow me to gain more insight that with further my knowledge of the work I do here at Brains on Fire. Plus, it’s always nice to try to be a better human.

CATHY

What is your goal?
To take all of my vacation days.

Why did you choose this goal?
Because I never do. Honestly having 30 days + holidays makes that nearly impossible. I always end up having more days than I can use at the end of the year. In 2016, I was able to take a lot of Fridays off in late Nov. – Dec. and I noticed that A) I got everything accomplished that needed to be and B) I felt more in control of my work|life balance.

How will this goal help you become better professionally?
I think time away from the office actually sparks insights about my work/our clients and enables me to come back refreshed and more focused.

MOE

In 2017 I am challenging myself to dress in a professionally badass, capable & strong (yet approachable & fun) manner for SIX WHOLE MONTHS  on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

I will do this (hoping to form a habit and live into my adult style) from January 17th until July 17th at which point I will collect $100 and probably buy shoes.

I was inspired by a few things: I’m turning 30 in April. I want to try to look the way I want to feel every day. I threw away 75% of my clothing in the past two weeks and I feel like I can actually see my closet. I want to get back to taking risks and expressing myself through fashion. I read  this blog post on selfies from Man Repeller and was humbled by the story she saw play out through her clothes along the way. I want to dress like myself and I’m not sure entirely what that looks like — this will help me find out!

EMILY

What is your goal?
Streamline 3-5 BOF processes this year

Why did you choose this goal?
I know we can constantly work smarter and as someone who’s had the privilege of working across multiple departments, I have a good view and personal passion for improvement!

How will this goal help you become better professionally?
I want to get better at serving our internal logistics here at BOF – the more we are humming along in our work, the better it is!

GENO

To give back more in 2017 as in putting myself out there to challenge us in marketing to do more good in the world. Life is short, we take so much for granted. This ties into my health issue and my personal journey to find meaning… meaning for why we want to connect as humans for the most part. As well as when it does go wrong, can we correct the course. This might not make any sense but its a big driver for me right now, to inspire folks to do more good, to accept greatness, the good of others, and pay it forward.

BEN

What is your goal?
I have a few goals this year…

Read 12 books this year. One a month. I have kids. That’s a big task 🙂
Complete one higher learning course. (Probably from Ideo University)
Complete 100 hours of learning to code online.

Why did you choose this goal?
I love reading, but it’s a challenge with kids and busy schedule. I’m getting back to it.
I love the way Ideo thinks and want to infuse my work with some more of their thinking
I want to learn to code. I hate not knowing things. Coding is REALLY one of the things that frustrates me if I don’t understand what’s being talked about.

How will this goal help you become better professionally?
I believe learning new things, and expanding what you know, in almost any category contributes to being better at my job. The reading is what I’m most excited about.

MARY SUSAN

What is your goal?
To build a website for myself.

Why did you choose this goal?
I’ve never done it before and I understand very little about web development.

How will this goal help you become better professionally?
This will help me professionally bc i will hopefully understand more about web development and seeing a project start from start to finish! Completing (sort of) the loop of my knowledge!
