Embracing organized chaos.

The other day, Megan sent me a fantastic interview with Saundra Pelletier, CEO of Women’s Care Global, from the New York Times.

Megan and I often discuss our own brand of “organized chaos” at Brains on Fire. So when I read this quote from Saundra’s interview, my heart smiled with understanding.

“We’re a start-up. I love organized chaos. We’re willing to roll and turn and twist and evolve, but some people don’t like that. Bureaucracy makes sense to them. Those people are going to be unhappy if they come here and they need “Groundhog Days,” where they come in every day and they do the same thing. I want people who don’t want to get comfortable.”

I could have said these exact set of words about life at Brains on Fire. We’re a start up, even though we have been around a long, long time. Our work requires us to think like a start up.

There is no tidy process for creating community.

There is no day to day sameness to connecting humans around shared passions.

We will always be a company that embraces organized chaos, because when you’re working with people and hearts and passions, your work is a bit messy.

And wonderful and magical and powerful.

Working with real people takes courage.

But from where I sit, the life changing growth for the courageous organizations we serve is worth the effort.
